Celebrities Promote Vegetarianism and Animal Rights

（♥♥♥♥♥♥）Paul McCartney and his Stella (a renowned fashion designer) are famous spokespersons promoting vegetarianism in the UK, where the number of vegetarians has nearly doubled in the last ten years, and where 27% of the population has said that they would consider giving up meat.

Stella has also done much for the anti-fur movement, which promotes the use of non-animal based materials such as synthetic fabrics for people’s apparel.[1]

（♥♥♥♥♥）Fast Food Nation: A movie based on a best-selling 2002 book about the enormously negative effects of the meat industry, due to open later this year. The director is Hollywood vegetarian Richard Linklater.

（♥♥♥♥♥）Dennis Kucinich, US Congressman from Ohio, is a pure vegan who continues to campaign for “nonviolence as an organizing principle of society” and for the establishment of a Department of Peace. After starting his career as the youngest mayor in US history, he retreated for 15 years, spending much of his time practicing spiritually in the desert of New Mexico. He is one of the poorest members of Congress, living alone in a small house and devoting all his time and energy to peace efforts.

Supermarkets Set the Trend

（♥♥♥）Wal-mart: With 100 million US customers per week, the world’s biggest retailer recently announced that it would double its organic food offerings, making organic food accessible to all and knocking the image that organic food is only for the rich! After paying close attention to the small but growing organic market for several years, Wal-mart decided to make its move now. (Yahoo! News March 6th, 2006)

（♥♥♥♥♥）Whole Foods: Now America’s 4th largest supermarket chain and the world’s biggest organic grocer, Whole Foods was originally established by vegetarian John Mackey in Texas. Mackey is known to give much of his earnings to animal welfare and spiritual groups. He lectures at universities on the horrors of factory farming.

 “Factory farms will be declared illegal within 30 years,” Mackey recently told an audience at Princeton University.[2]
