Floating just off the Australian coast is the country’s first commercial wave-generated power station. It is ready to supply about 500 homes south of Sydney, Australia, with electricity and fresh drinking water. Electricity is generated when waves wash into a funnel facing the ocean; this drives air through a pipe and into a turbine capable of pumping 500kw of clean power each day into the local grid. The station is a prototype for a larger installation to be built on the southern coast of Australia. Interest in building similar plants has come from Hawaii, Spain, South Africa, Mexico, Chile and the US. John Bell, the Chief Finance Officer for Energetech, who developed the station, said, “The energy in waves is the densest of any natural sources of energy. It’s pretty much always there and it doesn’t go away like the sun and wind do.” Congratulations Australia for using
