Vegetarian Era

New Era for an
Organic Vegan World

By The Vegetarian House, San Jose, California, USA (Originally in English)

On November 21, Golden Year 4 (2007), the Hippy Gourmet crew came to the Vegetarian House to film a cooking show for their popular TV series. This caught the attention of NBC, one of the major television networks in the United States, and they too came along to obtain a story.

The Vegetarian House, founded by Supreme Master Ching Hai in 1994 is the only organic vegan restaurant in California's South Bay, which inspired the Hippy Gourmet to come on location. The TV show travels the world highlighting international cuisine, organics, sustainable agriculture, alternative energy and people making a difference for a better world.

NBC aired the story in the evening news “Going Green” segment. It highlighted how the Vegetarian House made the transition from being a vegan restaurant to becoming an organic vegan restaurant. It also showed how the Vegetarian House earned a green business certification for composting, energy efficiency and using biodegradable supplies.

Within minutes of the news report airing on television, the telephone started ringing with many excited people asking questions about our restaurant. In the week following, many new customers came to enjoy our delicious cuisine, including the Mayor of San Jose, Chuck Reed. All the Vegetarian House staff members were filled with Master's love and blessing, which we shared with our new and old customers.
James Ehrlich, Hippy Gourmet producer

During their experiences in filming the show, Chef Bruce Brennan, the host of Hippy Gourmet and his producer, James Ehrlich, developed a great appreciation for the Vegetarian House, and the teachings of Supreme Master Ching Hai.

Ehrlich explained, “We’ve traveled around the world and our show is in its eighth season, reaching over nine million homes a week! ... I put the Vegetarian House as maybe one of the top three vegetarian restaurants in the world not only for vegetarian cuisine, but for cuisine overall.” Ehrlich continued, “I think that there's a secret ingredient to the Vegetarian House and it's something we’ve discovered through some of our travels through Tuscany and some of our travels through the rainforests of the Amazon. We’ve discovered one thing that is sort of consistent, if you will, throughout the greatest restaurants and the greatest chefs in the world, and that component is Love. When there is Love and there is spirituality, and you feel what people are imparting into the food and you know that that taste is coming right back out.”
Vicky Nguyen, NBC reporter

The Hippy Gourmet's half hour TV program at the Vegetarian House will air in the United States in early March, 2008. We would like to thank James Ehrlich and Bruce Brennan for creating an excellent television program and introducing our vegan organic restaurant to the world. We also thank NBC News and Ms. Vicky Nguyễn for her wonderful and informative news story. May God bless all to live in happiness, harmony and love.
