I was born in Formosa and am now 12 years old. Before being born as a human, I lived in the world above. One time, I saw some angels queuing up to be born as different kinds of elegant and beautiful puppies. I wanted to be a puppy too, so I joined them. From above, I could see lots of kennels crowded with newborn puppies down below, and rows of angels were descending into their bodies. When it was nearly my turn, I saw the angel before me getting ready to jump down to be a Maltese. I couldn’t help exclaiming, “That’s great! It is a Maltese! That’s what I want to be.” Then the angel suddenly stopped and said, “Well! Then you go first.” So I gladly jumped down and became a Maltese. When I first entered the puppy’s body, I couldn’t open my eyes. I wanted to suck some milk, but was shoved aside by other puppies. To show that I was not weak, I pushed my way back to my dog mother and sucked her milk. Wow! It was warm and sweet, and so delicious.
Gradually, I grew big and a lady took me home and kept me in her kitchen, where there was a dog bed, a tumbler and a food bowl, but the dog bed had the smell of another dog. I dared not sleep there, in another dog’s territory.
I did not like the food that my caretaker fed me. It was always meat, which felt cold. She always wondered, “What’s wrong? Why don’t you eat?” I only ate a little reluctantly when I was starving. One day, I climbed onto a chair and jumped onto the dining table. There I saw a plate of salad. “Wow! Salad. Great!” I had almost gobbled down the whole plate before my caretaker noticed. She quickly took me off the table and gave me the remaining salad. After that, she often gave me vegetable salad. My lady caretaker made a dog hole in the front door so I could go out and play in the garden. She taught me how to squeeze through the hole and how to get back in. Now I could choose to play in the garden or in the house as I wished. Each time it rained, I went into the garden and rolled in the mud until I was covered with dirt all over. My caretaker didn’t like it because she had to bathe me. So, on rainy days, she would quickly lock the dog hole. I could only whimper around her, begging her to open the dog hole. At first she refused, but finally gave in and let me roll about in the garden. My caretaker often took me for a walk. Before passing a bowel movement or urine, I would sniff about the lawn for any smell of other dogs. If it had been marked by another dog, its image would naturally appear in my mind. If it was a big dog, I wouldn’t dare to pee there. If it was a smaller dog, then I would dare. Sometimes visitors unexpectedly came to our home. Among them was a little boy who brutally grabbed me by my back and hair. It really hurt! And I started barking. When my caretaker heard me, she quickly came over to see what had happened, and I immediately dashed into her arms to seek protection. When she was busy doing something, I would stay close to her and hide from the kids. I used to like kids a lot, but became afraid of them after that incident. My caretaker often left a pile of dried clothes on the balcony, and I loved crawling into them for a nap. One time she became very worried when she thought I was missing. I wanted to ignore her, but then I didn’t want her to worry, so I called out softly a few times. Hearing my voice, she quickly came over and said, “Little darling! So here you are. I was very worried when I couldn’t find you.” Then she would let me sit beside her and begin to fold the clothes. One day, a man came to visit us. My caretaker warned me in advance, “Do not bite his feet. They stink!” I didn’t heed her advice. But even at the first nip, I couldn’t stand it and rolled on the floor wiping my mouth against the carpet. Frantically, I ran around biting everything trying to get rid of the foul smell. My caretaker looked at me and laughed. She told me to quickly drink some water. I had to drink a lot of water and eat a lot of food before the smell finally subsided. That stopped me from biting human feet again. One day, I planned to leave the body and this world when my caretaker was not at home. But she came home early and saw me dying. She held me close in her arms. I slowly left the body in the form of a dog. Very soon, I transformed into an angel as big as my caretaker. I adjusted my vibrations to those of my caretaker. Surprisingly, she could see me. She was shocked and so was I. I found that she didn’t know what she was seeing, so I quickly changed back to a dog, wagging my tail and giving her a cute look. She immediately understood and waved goodbye to me happily. Her friends there could not see me. They were bewildered to see her suddenly look sad, then happy and waving to the air. I bade her farewell and quickly soared upwards back to the world above. Before my mother came to Earth, she needed to find a suitable being to be her future child to help her learn her lesson. She asked for help and many angels came but could not meet her need. When I came, she sincerely asked me to help her learn her lesson, so I agreed. Overjoyed, she descended to Earth. I sometimes went down to visit my future mother and found that she was still very young, so I decided to be born as a dog first. The lifespan of a dog roughly coincided with the length of time required for my mother to become an adult. An angel knew that I was about to be born on Earth and requested to be my dog. Of course I said, “OK!” The news spread. More than a dozen angels asked to be my dogs. I only said yes to the first few angels. One time, when I was chatting with some angels in the world above, the news came that Master Ching Hai was going to perform a dance! Everyone rushed over to see Master Ching Hai. Instantly, the sky was full of celestial beings. I flew closer to Earth and looked down from a cloud. After a short while, an angel flew over and told me, “Hurry up! Hurry up! It is your time to be born!” I said, “Can’t we wait a little longer? I have not seen enough.” The angel said, “No! No! You must hurry!” I had no choice but to go to God’s place with him. God was sitting on Hiers throne with an archangel on each side. God told me to pick the shortcomings for my human life. I was too lazy to pick any, but God said, “No way! Only the Enlightened Masters do not need to pick any shortcomings.” I said naively, “I’ll be an Enlightened Master then.” God replied, “No! It is an arduous job to be an Enlightened Master. You have a mission to accomplish. I will let you remember all these things, but you won’t remember what your mission is.” So I started to pick my shortcomings. I picked so many that an archangel reminded me, “Haven’t you picked too many?” I quickly deleted some of the shortcomings. After that, I jumped down from the hole beside me and instantly entered the body of a baby. At that moment, my head was emerging from my mother’s womb. The air was cold and the light intense. I felt very uncomfortable and wanted to go back into mother’s body, which was warm and had gentle light. Eventually, I was born into this world. At that moment, I thought, “Is this what the human world is like?” I protested loudly, “Why is the light so strong and the air so cold?” But all that came out were cries, “Wa! Wa! Wa!” I thought protesting would be futile, so I stopped crying. During the time I was growing up on Earth, I could remember all these things, though I only told mother recently when we were chatting. Today, I live happily and harmoniously with my parents, my younger brother and my dogs. I hope that after reading this story, everyone will love animals like they love their own family.
