Relief Efforts in the Wake of a Summer Typhoon
By Formosa Relief Team (Originally in Chinese)
On
May 3, Typhoon Kujira swept across Sorsogon Province in the Philippines,
causing floods and landslides that affected tens of thousands of
people. Immediately, Supreme Master Ching Hai contributed US$20,000
for relief work. On May 9, a Formosa Relief Team was dispatched
to Manila and went to the affected areas in Sorsogon Province the
next day.
With the information from the Provincial Governor’s Office that about 9,000 households were severely in need, the team decided to prepare 10,000 portions of relief materials for distribution in the five most seriously damaged areas of Bulan, Juban, Magallanes, Matnog and Bacon. Then with the assistance of the government, our relief team purchased 602 sacks of rice at a low price, as well as sugar, soy sauce, rice powder and other supplies from the biggest local supermarket.
The materials were distributed on May 13 and 14 along with SOS Climate
Change flyers to let the people know that natural disasters are
related to global warming and that a plant-based diet can significantly
reverse the trend. Provincial government officials and local social
welfare bureaus in the five areas expressed their deepest gratitude
to Supreme Master Ching Hai.
