MingDao University of Formosa has been committed to creating a “sustainable energy demonstration campus” in recent years, using solar energy, wind power, hydrogen and other forms of clean renewable energy. The campus now partly relies on the energy directly derived from natural sources and is working toward becoming self-sufficient in the future.

“First, we use solar panels to generate electricity for the opening and closing of the gate. Second, we built a wind power generation system near our orchard, to provide lighting for bio fuel crop cultivation,” said Dr. Chang Chi-lung, director of MingDao’s Energy Center, in our interview.

“At the main academic buildings, we have set up wind and solar energy systems to generate hydrogen from the electrolysis of water. The gas is used as fuel for our third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation hydrogen cars. We also have a 2-hectare greenhouse for growing biomass crops, which are fermented to produce ethanol that in turn is used to generate hydrogen as fuel for our hydrogen car. The car is equipped with an intelligent unmanned control system and GPS, so it can make demonstration laps around campus roads.”

MingDao University has invented Formosa’s first hydrogen car. For the next phase of development, Dr. Chang said, “We hope to make the fuel cell flat in order to be installed horizontally under the car to enhance the space, weight and appearance of the vehicle. We will continue to develop medium-sized hydrogen buses, which will be unmanned, to serve campus transportation. This is our goal.”

MingDao’s President Wang Da-yung pointed out that the school’s motto is “Passion, Vision and Action.” “Through the sustainable energy demonstration campus, we hope to make the community and our students aware of such efforts and to help them understand the concepts of environmental protection and energy conservation,” he said. “We must realize that there is a need to switch to new forms of energy. We also hope that everyone can practice self-discipline and follow a lifestyle that brings minimal impact on the planet.”
