[Tainan] From February 20 to March 2, Golden Year 5 (2008), the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival was held in Southern Taiwan Science Park, attracting over six million people. Invited to participate in the event, initiates from The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association held an exhibition with the theme “Let Peace Begin with Us,” showcasing Supreme Master Ching Hai’s exquisite artistic creations, including decorative lamps, colorful fans and paintings, which attracted much public attention. As warm, gentle light radiated from Master’s creative lamps, visitors said that our area was the most distinctive at the venue and that it was a delightful surprise to see Supreme Master Ching Hai’s lamps. Many people were highly fascinated by the lamp designs and took pictures of the rare artistic works. Each night of the festival, the initiates performed instrumental and dance programs, and distributed booklets and promotional materials about Supreme Master Television. Films on global warming were also shown followed by a prize quiz, and the winners won copies of Master’s latest books. We also promoted Supreme Master Television, showed its programs to the audience, and distributed many SOS flyers, thus calling people’s attention to the severe consequences of global warming. Our actions touched many people’s hearts, and a number of monks and high school students asked for flyers to distribute in their areas. During the 12-day festival, hot weather alternated with cold, but the sisters and brothers withstood the wind and rain with only one thought in mind—the need to express Master’s concern about global warming to as many people as possible, In fact, Her ideas were widely accepted by the public. In addition, the Tainan County magistrate presented a testimonial of thanks to The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association participating in the event. It is our sincere hope that more people will become vegetarian and protect the environment to reverse global warming. May this planet be filled with light for many more millennia!

Students Welcome the Vegetarian Lifestyle
By Taoyuan News Group (Originally in Chinese)
[Taoyuan] After being introduced to the SOS global-warming message by sister-initiate Chen, their teacher at Taoyuan County Yangmei Junior High School, more than 80 percent of the students decided to switch to vegetarian lunches at school instead of having meat-based meals. Sister Chen showed two short films—Hidden Tears Behind the Iron Wall and SOS NASA Climate Report—to three of her classes and provided additional information. The students were shocked to realize that the meat-based diet causes enormous damage to the environment. They also felt that it is cruel to slaughter animals for food. The response was surprisingly good, and the following day most of the students spoke to their teachers about changing their lunch orders, which had already been made in advance. They also consulted sister Chen further about the vegetarian diet. In her three classes, more than two-thirds of the students requested vegetarian lunches because they wanted to save the planet. Some students also asked sister Chen to show them the slaughterhouse scenes from Hidden Tears Behind the Iron Wall a second time to help them remember the motive behind their change, and thus stay away from meat permanently. One of the students even copied the contents of the SOS flyer into his school notebook to remind his teachers about the global warming crisis. He also shared the “Be Veg to Save Earth” ideal with his family and friends, and his father was so touched by the boy’s sincerity that he agreed to let his whole family switch to a vegetarian lifestyle. Yangmei Junior High School has since arranged for two sessions in which sister Chen will speak to all its seventh-grade students and Chinese-language teachers about the SOS message. We believe that such concerted efforts will have a positive impact, thus awakening all humans to act together to stop the global warming crisis.

Celebrating Tree-Planting Month
Compiled by the Formosa News Groups (Originally in Chinese)
[Formosa] As a way to address global warming, Formosa’s Forestry Bureau launched a project entitled “Plant a Tree in One Lifetime to Create a Green Home” during Tree-Planting Month 2008. The project’s aim is to encourage people to plant at least one tree in their lifetime, thus doing their part to help preserve Earth and leave a sustainable environment to their descendants. Through practical action, various centers of The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in Formosa supported this meaningful effort, which reflected the government’s constructive intention to care for the environment. On March 29 and 30, almost a hundred initiates from the Taoyuan Center participated in tree-planting activities in an indigenous mountain township and residential area named Forest Community in the Quanyin industrial township. Despite unfavorable weather on the second day of work, they managed to plant 1,100 saplings, winning the appreciation of the event’s sponsor. Also, in Taipei, fellow initiates planted 200 pine trees in a suburban township as part of their “Go Veg, Plant Trees, Be Green, Save the Earth!” activity, which was intended to inspire people to create and pass on the cultural tradition of loving the earth and respecting life. In addition, fellow initiates from the Kaohsiung Center planted about 200 trees of different species to protect the environment, add a touch of nature and greenery to the Center and have an open-air meditation hall under the trees in the near future. And after the group meditation session on Sunday, March 23, fellow initiates from the Laiyi Center in Pingtung planted 80 saplings at the Center. They will continue to hold tree-planting activities and collaborate with local communities to turn Formosa into a lush, green abode.
