Angels in Yellow Vests
Help Typhoon Victims
By Korea News Group (Originally in Korean)

Typhoon Nari recently struck the southern part of South Korea, dumping a record rainfall for a single day on Jeju Island. The estimated US$32 million damage ranked record high, with countless people affected and numerous houses flooded.

Concerned for the wellbeing of local people, Supreme Master Ching Hai immediately asked the Korean fellow initiates to assess the emergency needs of the affected areas. The Korean relief team learned that help was needed in Jeju, so about 15 of our Association members rushed to the disaster site by airplane or ship. Jeju islanders warmly greeted these angels in yellow vests bearing the SM logo who very willingly gave up their Moon Festival holidays to help them.

Heartwarming Endeavor

Upon their arrival on September 21, Association members spent the first two days clearing homes and warehouses of debris and dirt, and cleaning up the environment.

There were many in desperate need of assistance, including an 80-year-old lady living alone, a woman with a broken foot in cast, as well as a family with a disabled person.

At a park, broken pine branches were removed and the environment restored in time for the Moon Festival, an effort highly appreciated by the local community. Constant contact with the Volunteers Center sent the Korean relief team on one assignment after another, earning compliments for finishing at least three times faster than other teams.

During an inspection tour of what was being done, Jeju Governor Kim Tae-hwan personally expressed his appreciation for our assistance. We invited Mr. Kim Seong-Gi (Head of 1365 Central Rescue Team) to share with us his 10-years of experience in rescue and relief work around the country. We plan to cooperate in future relief endeavors to enhance the operation of the Korean relief team.

Efforts Appreciated by All

On September 23, the relief team braved the rain working alongside local officials and the military to restore a beach to its natural beauty. When we heard that an old couple was rendered helpless after their greenhouse collapsed, we rushed to the muddy site to offer our help. Thanks to Master’s arrangement, an expert rescue worker arrived to lend us a hand to dismantle the strong structure of the greenhouse.

Mr. Kim Seong-Gi said, “Among the volunteer organizations I have worked with, members of The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association have a pure heart and a bright mind. They are willing to do anything and work with commitment. Even though it was raining heavily, they still managed to dismantle the greenhouse. I was very touched.” Work on the greenhouse continued into the next day.

The devastation caused by Typhoon Nari on Jeju Island exposed the need for more local organizations like ours that directly engage in relief operations. We felt inspired and uplifted by our service to others. Many female members on our relief team are over 50, yet they rose to the challenges of the relief operation. We hope that, with Master Ching Hai’s blessing and love, the people of Jeju will soon regain their positive, active and peaceful life.
