Esfuerzos en Marcha para Elevar la Conciencia Acerca del Cambio Climático

Por el Grupo de Noticias de Corea (Originalmente en Coreano)

[Seoul] The endeavor to help alleviate the global warming crisis continues in South Korea, as Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association members take every available opportunity to urge others to adopt a vegetarian diet.

Association members from Seoul joined in a government-sponsored pledge ceremony held at the National Assembly on April 18, Golden Year 5 (2008), to promote vegetarianism for the health and well-being of Korean youth. The initiates organized a vegetarian food-sampling event, held a lecture on the importance of vegetarianism and the harmful effects of the meat-based diet and showed the NASA film on climate change. March 30 was proclaimed Child Health Day by the Assembly participants, who included lawmakers, teachers and leading members of The Korean Teachers and Education Workers’ Union.

About three weeks earlier, on March 30, over a hundred fellow initiates joined a procession in downtown Seoul, carrying SOS signboards accompanied by related audio messages. Free vegetarian delicacies were also offered to encourage people to choose vegetarianism as a viable solution to climate change.

Also, to celebrate Arbor Day on April 5 in Incheon, Association members took a proactive step to curb rising temperatures by planting 5,000 trees at the request of the Environment and Forestry Bureau along with a thousand other participants.

Then during the Seoul Earth Day celebration on April 20, the summer-like weather provided indisputable evidence that the Earth is growing warmer. For this event Association members served vegetarian food to over 1,500 visitors in front of Seoul City Hall. Many people were surprised to learn that a non-meat diet could ease climate change, and representative Yoon Jun-Ha of the Korean Federation for the Environment Movement suggested a solution, saying, “We should cut down on meat consumption. We should use public transportation and fewer products and goods. The government should set new policies to mitigate global warming and the private sector should reduce energy consumption.”

Korean Edition of Los Perros de mi Vida - un Bestseller en la Librería Kyobo

The Korean version of Los Perros de Mi Vida, has reached the top of the bestsellers’ list at Kyobo Book Store, the biggest bookstore in Korea (see photo 1). Since its publication in Korean, the book has been steadily sold at major bookstores. It has also been listed in the Today’s Best Book section on Kyobo’s homepage. This book is remarkable in that the animals tell their stories through the Author instead of the Author talking about the animals. Critics say that it has dramatically changed Koreans’ perception of animals and helped them to love animals and live in harmony with them more. This is the first time in Korea that a book about animals has been a No. 1 bestseller. Therefore, it is a good indication that our society’s view and treatment of animals has changed for the better.

Eco Concert Draws Attention
to Global Warming

[Busán] An eco-concert and an outdoor singing contest held by the Busan Center provided the perfect setting for Korean fellow initiates to raise public awareness of global warming and introduce the vegetarian diet as a means to resolve the crisis.

The Love-for-Earth Concert attracted large numbers of visitors to Daecheon Park in Haeundae on April 13, Golden Year 5 (2008). Many weekend hikers also stopped by after receiving invitation cards and SOS flyers that local brothers and sisters had started passing out at the park entrance two hours before the event.

The concert featured performances on the saxophone, Korean traditional musical instruments, flutes that included a large bamboo flute, as well as an ancient scholar dance. A song writer performed the ocarina to express the pain suffered by nature and animals. During the concert, visitors participated in a quiz on global warming and the vegetarian diet, and were interested in acquiring more information via Supreme Master Television. Many people also took part in the open singing contest. Fellow initiates were delighted that participants pledged to join in the campaign to stop global warming and to respect life. KNN (Korea News Network) reported the event on its “News Eye” program.

A Blissful Video Seminar

[Ulsan] On May 13, local fellow initiates held a video seminar at the community center in Ulsan to spread Master’s teachings. A lot of effort was put into promoting this activity through posters and flyers.

Before the event started, in the hallway of the community center, the guests had an opportunity to enjoy tea and cookies while looking at Master’s publications. About 150 visitors came to the seminar. They were given a bag filled with a global warming DVD and flyer, a sample book, a copy of the Ulsan Center’s contact information and one of Master’s lectures. Following the video introduction on SOS climate change, one of Master’s lectures was played. 33 people learned the Convenient Method and one of them thanked us repeatedly for having the seminar so he could learn this method. Veggie food boxes were prepared for the guests and everyone left with a bright smile. Fellow initiates all had a great time working together to bring Master’s love to Ulsan.

Celebrating the 8th San-chung Herb Festival

On May 5, upon invitation from the county office, our fellow initiates participated in the 8th San-chung Herb Festival to help save our planet. The day happened to be a Korean holiday -- Children’s Day; therefore, thousands of people from all over the country came to the event. Many asked about the connection between global warming and vegetarianism, and applauded the initiates’ efforts. One couple wanted to know more about our Association and a senior citizen volunteered to help with the campaign.

Fellow initiates also performed in the event’s environmental concert. Through singing, dancing, playing the ocarina and dae-keum, a Korean traditional instrument, the audience was informed about vegetarianism and global warming, and realized the importance of choosing this noble and healthy way to save our planet.
