[Hong Kong] Mientras el calentamiento global continúa, nuestra hermosa Tierra está enfrentando una grave crisis. Los compañeros iniciados en Hong Kong están tomando medidas para salvar a nuestro planeta de diferentes maneras.

Light-box Displays

From April 11 to May 8, Golden Year 5 (2008), 140 light-boxes were installed at the busiest metro and railway stations in Hong Kong, displaying a message urging people to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle, plant trees, and use sustainable energy to mitigate global warming.

Pamphlets and SOS Document Folders

A global warming pamphlet was compiled with information and articles selected from the News magazine and Supreme Master Television website. A total of 50,000 and 20,000 copies of the pamphlet were printed in Chinese and English, respectively, for distribution in Hong Kong, Formosa and the United States. The response was positive and overwhelming. As many as 478 school principals in Hong Kong received the pamphlet, while school teachers were given more than 10,000 copies as well as 50,000 SOS document folders. Some teachers discussed the contents with students in class and during environmental protection activities.

SOS Flyers, Global Warming DVDs and Vegetarian Recipes

To date, 120,000 copies of the SOS flyer in Chinese, 15,000 copies in English, 20,000 global warming DVDs and 5,000 copies of the vegetarian recipe booklets have been distributed.

Direct Mail

In a first-time joint effort with the Hong Kong Post Office, global warming brochures were mailed to 15,000 prominent people in various fields via the postal service. A fellow initiate in the real estate business offered both time and money to distribute more than 20,000 flyers to people in Hong Kong.

Writing Letters to TV Hosts

Fellow initiates wrote letters to well-known TV hosts in Hong Kong, appealing to them to use their position and fulfill their obligation as media workers by delivering in-depth reports on global warming to the public. Motivated by the persistent endeavors of the fellow initiates, many media have become more concerned about the issue. Television programs exploring the crisis and introducing the vegetarian diet have been shown recently. Newspaper columns on environmental protection have also appeared.

Hopefully, with persistent and concerted efforts, more Hong Kong citizens will join the ranks of vegetarians fighting to protect the environment and create a brighter future for all beings.

A Call for the Environment: We Care! We Act!

[Hong Kong] On April 10, Golden Year 5 (2008), local initiates attended the Earth Day opening of Hong Kong’s first-ever carbon-neutral celebration at the Cyberport commercial complex. The theme of the event was “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.”

Initiates provided participants with vegetarian food and SOS brochures and DVDs to increase the awareness that adopting a vegetarian diet is the most effective way to reduce global warming. We also interviewed distinguished guests that included Hong Kong Environmental Protection Officer, Ms. Joanne Yung and Mr. Edwin Lau, Director of Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong). All of the guests, exhibitors and media representatives were pleasantly surprised by the colorful, tasty vegetarian food. Supermodel and environmental ambassador, Jocelyn Luko said, “I would like to try a vegetarian diet. It is not only beneficial to our health but also to our planet.” And environmentalist Mr. Cliff Spenger, “Walking Tree Man” from California, USA remarked, “If everyone can start to cut meat from their diet, it will help our Mother Earth a lot.”

These views were widely shared, and empowered people to choose the vegetarian diet as a significant step toward curbing climate change.
