Displaced Families Assisted

On March 21, 2008, the Kenya Relief Team, comprised of members of The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, traveled to the Nakuru district to assist victims displaced by the recent civil unrest in Kenya. Upon hearing about the Kenyan people’s situation, Supreme Master Ching Hai compassionately contributed US$20,000 for immediate relief.

Members of the team assessed the situation and identified three areas where assistance was needed: the Solay police station, the Akuisi camp and the Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) camp, which had not received any aid at all.

With help and guidance from local NGOs, the team determined the items most required by the victims, primarily women and children, and thus purchased rice, beans, soap, maize flour, cooking oil, cups, spoons, plates, sanitary goods, female hygiene products and blankets for the cold rainy season, which was quickly approaching. The local chief, NGOs and aid recipients were deeply thankful for the relief supplies and expressed their sincere thanks to Master and the Association members. In fact, their gratitude was so profound that they even bestowed African names on the relief team members, an honor reserved only for special occasions!

The team also shared the Alternative Living message with the people, who seemed very eager to receive information about the vegetarian diet and its health benefits as well as how it can assist them in their current situation. People came from all over the camps to receive the beautiful flyers.

Upon receiving the relief items, Peter Mbae, Coordinator of the Rongai All Churches Coalition and Chairman of Rongai Youth Action immediately sent a letter of gratitude saying that over 250 families, almost 1,000 people, directly benefited from the timely supplies.

The Association members are currently planning another visit to provide seeds and fertilizer to the communities that rely on agriculture for subsistence so that they can survive into the future.

The relief team members wish to thank Master for Her loving guidance, and they are pleased to report that Kenya has become stabilized, its people are happy and smiling and peace once again thrives in this beautiful country.

Note: Details about the expenditures and relevant receipts will be published in the next issue.
