<WASHINGTON>Oral sex easily infects adult
monkeys with the simian AIDS virus — a close biological
cousin to HIV — according to a new study.
In experiments
with rhesus monkeys, investigators at the Dana-Farber Cancer
Centre in Boston and Tulane University in New Orleans found
adult animals exposed orally to the SIV virus became infected
with the virus and developed AIDS. “On the basis of
reports on humans and our study, unprotected receptive oral
intercourse should be added to the list of behaviors that
place people at risk for infection by HIV,” said Ruth
Ruprecht of Dana-Farber.
